So, you'd like to try your hand at Internet Marketing. Well, grab a coffee, clear your mind and get ready to start absorbing a lot of new concepts and information. There's so much to learn, but you don't have to know everything all at once to get started. This series of articles will reveal, step by step, the process of becoming an online marketer.
Step 1- Finding a Niche. You need something to market. What product(s) are you going to promote? To determine this, you'll need to do a little market research to identify a "niche" that is going to make money. A niche is a specific segment of a market. It focuses in on one small, but potentially profitable area. For example, you'll find about 148,000,000 searches on Google for "dog". The world loves dogs, but if you were to try to promote dogs as a product, you'd soon find efforts lost in those millions of competing searches.
Dig a little deeper and you find smaller markets such as particular dog breeds. For the purpose of demonstration, let's look at chihuahuas. Can you successfully promote chihuahuas? Not likely, but dig deeper and you'll find that chihuahua owners are shopping for items in connection with that breed, Iiems such as collars. Break it down further into types of collars or styles of collars and you might have yourself a niche.
Now I'm not suggesting you start promoting chihuahua collars. First, you'd need to find out if that niche is in demand. One way to find out is to search it on Google. How many search results are there? How many sponsored results? Those are the ones on the right that are paid ads. If other people are promoting that niche, then there is profit to be made, but if you see too many, there may be so much competition that it will be extremely difficult to get decent ranking for your site.
You may have to dig a little deeper to find a smaller niche. One way to search for a niche that is likely to make you money is to visit "ClickBank". Just go to www.ClickBank.com and go to Market Place. That's where you'll find a menu on the left of product categories. Click on any category you like and choose a sub-category.
All the products available to promote from this site will be displayed. You can choose to have them displayed by various attributes. The default is by "popularity", but if you choose "gravity", it will display the products according to a number from highest to lowest. That number represents the number of affiliates that made sales of that product in the past 7 days. A gravity of 5 is less likely to be profitable that a gravity of 123.
Gravity isn't the only criteria to consider, but it says a lot about how well the product is selling. Consider also, products that are being promoted in the media. What are people talking about, looking for, selling or buying? Can you find a mirco-niche for one of those? Weight Loss is huge, if you'll excuse the pun, but you would have to do some market research to break that down into a niche to work with.
Take the time to do the market research before settling on a particular niche. You'll find it much easier to make money online with the right product and you won't waste a lot of time and effort promoting an unprofitable niche.
My next article will discuss domains, what they are, where to get one and how to choose a domain name that will rank high in Google
