Forget Driving Traffic Until You Know Your Numbers

Hands up who is driving traffic to their site without knowing their numbers, come on you know you are doing it!
That is by far the worst mistake any website owner or affiliate marketer can make. Far too many website owners drive as much traffic as possible to their site, when really they should stop driving traffic and focus more on their numbers.
So what numbers am I referring to?
Your conversion rates obviously.
Let's say you are currently getting a good amount of free or paid traffic to your site and each day you set in motion the various free traffic generating methods, to send more visitors to your site. Each day you drive more and more traffic, but traffic driving is plain boring and we all know it. So why not ditch this boring task and instead switch your focus to conversions?
Now conversion statistics are by no means any more exciting that traffic statistics, trust me I have tried both, but conversion growth can be very exciting.
So the first thing you will need is at least a little trickle of traffic, with no traffic you get no statistics, once you have your traffic trickle, you then need to give it some time. Yes, just sit back and collect the stats for around a month or so to get a good true picture of your conversions.
Once you have a clear picture, you can begin the traffic transformation cycle, and this is simply improving upon your current results. Again, let's say that you are driving traffic to a standard squeeze page, and the goal of the squeeze page is to of course collect a name and or an email address. You will be using an autoresponder service to gather these details, and most of these services will provide you with, at least, the basic opt in rate.
Now let's say you drive 100 people or visitors daily to your squeeze page, and only 10% opt in.
This means you will add 10 people or subscribers to your list each day.
Now, let's say you work on the various elements of the squeeze page, for example you split test the headline, and you increase the conversion rate to 20%, again this means you increase your optin from 10 to 20 a day.
Then, next you focus your efforts on the squeeze page benefit bullet points, and again you see a small increase, let's say 5%, so the squeeze page has now increased to a 25% conversion rate ie, 25 subscribers a day.
Your page is still getting the same amount of traffic, 100 visits a day, but instead of only collecting 10 subscribers a day, you now get 25.
Now let's say you went the whole hog, and threw yourself into very serious split tests and increase your conversion rate to say 60% or 70%, this is not unheard of in the internet marketing world, in face some marketers claim to have a 90% optin rate.
You would essentially have 60 to 70 new subscribers every day, when all you done was a few simple tweaks.
Now, once you have the squeeze page converting at a high percentage, then and only then, you can begin to drive traffic again.
I hope you can see the benefits of stopping all traffic driving until you know your numbers, it really will make your marketing efforts much more fruitful.
So please remember to test and tweak rather than focus on traffic generation methods.
